With the E70 seating 7 people and the X6 introduction, I think BMW was rethinking the concept of the original X5. The Original X5 was the midle sized sporty SAV with a remarkable character... today, unfortunately, the X5 is turning into a mini-van with 7 seats (no matter how they try to hide this fact with putting new bumpers with stupid jet intakes) while the X6 SAV coupe is taking all the sporty attributes to the extreme with 4 seats...
Why I say unfortunately? because I think that many people like me identified with the E53 because it was the middle sized sporty SAV having-it-all... today i feel the X5 has become so huge for me (I don't need 7 seats and a lenght almost 5 meters) and the X6 is so agressive and non-practiacal for me (3 tons of steel to transport 4 people)...
So BMW did a huge mistake in leaving the ground to Porsche cayenne to take over the customers of E53... I believe they were dragged into this mistake by Japanese cars like Nissan pathfinder/Armada and Nissan Infinity FX... what they did not realize is that the Original X5 had its success because of its character, so why follow Nissan/Infinity strategy for huge living room / extreme sporty? who said it's better??
For me, I would have created the X7 to have the 7 seater luxurious SUV and the X6 to compete with the FX, while keeping the characeter of teh X5 unchanged...
