the Beemie has started making a bit of a mechanical noise lately, it sounds a bit like I'm driving on offroad tyres and it's speed related not RPM related....

also at hard acceleration I sometimes get a shudder from the back of the car.

My suspect would be drive shaft bearing and transfer box.... any other suggestions? (I'm no car guy clearly)

Any changes in rpm's during the shudder?

Jump in rpm is usually gearbox related.

Drop in rpm is usually vacuum leak related.

No change is probably guibo or csb.

Not 100% true but it's a place to start.

no change in RPM as far as can be discerned, bit hard to say since it's only when flat out. I'd almost say a wheel that breaks traction... but considering I've mostly driven tiny slow cars I don't have any references

If it sounds like "off road tires" I would check the tires first, there might be some clues there. Did the off road tire noise and the shudder start at the same time ?? I just had some serious noise coming from the front of my E70 that was just cupped and crappy tires.

Start a separate post so we can help out better. Reach under and grab the rear shaft. Tug on it good. Does the center carrier bearing have a lot of slack? Is the rubber part broken?

Finished applying CeraKote trim restorer to the faded old gray plastic, which is now nice and black, mostly. This shit is amazing.

I did mine (what, 9 months ago now?) with the TW Graphene product - similar looking results and it seems to be lasting well.

Cheers gents! That trim restorer looks good indeed, I have a couple of light spots, might try that.

I'll drop the car off at the mechanic when he's back and let him have a look, will make a seperate thread if the issue isn't immedeately obvious.

So far I'll have these things to have him check:
- drive shaft bearing and guibo
- wheel bearings
- axles / transfer case

The tyres have been very quiet and I can't see any uneven wear, pressures are good. but I'll have him take a good look while checking the bearings

I wouldn't recommend only doing a few spots. These products tend to be "all in" - i.e. you need to do all trim for it to match. It's almost like painting the trim..

So don't start this job unless you have the time to do it all!
