that's perhaps wise thinking,

a "normal" SUV for carrying family and a 911 for fun is perhaps the right combination, rather than having a Porsche SUV

well, not till I can afford having ten cars in the garage, just for cleaning and looking at them

so true! USA pays 69k usd for an m3 with 4yr warranty and scheduled serviceing! just not fair is it? what market does this tax support? Does this have something to do with aussie manufactured cars? does anyone know the ins and outs of it? why do we pay so much.

I reckon its historic - euro cars were a real premium back in the late 80's and 90's - they were rare and expensive based on demand/supply. And our small market size meant it was expensive to bring them here and support (service etc) ...

things have really changed now but the euro dealers are still holding prices high - the taxes (e.g. luxury / import etc) are still there .. but prices are way beyond that excuse now ...therefore dealers are enjoying massive margins and competition has not been strong enough to warrant them pegging prices back .... I'm hoping this would change but doubt it over the next 3-5 years.... beyond that everyone will want euro car and prices should drop back hopefully ...

The US enjoy low pricing because its a volume market and its highly competitive market ...they are lucky ..then again they shat their pants during GFC and we didnt

I suspect that this is just a glitch due to Toyota cutting production during the GFC. Before the GFC, Toyota was well ahead of GM which was ahead of VW. I guess Toyota's more recent woes with recalls and the like may have an further impact but we'll have to wait and see. My understanding is that the fastest growing car company globally is Hyundai.

Either way, I can't see why the new Touareg will sell any better than the current model which has always been outsold in Australia by the Cayenne despite the price difference between the two and the fact that both were built on the same platform.

What is the go regarding the various E70 models for a family? Diesel vs Petrol? Which options are considered good value and which nice to have?

What is a fair price for xDrive30D and xDrive35D in say 2009 year with less than 10,000 kilometers?

Asking whether diesel or petrol is better is inviting a "How long is a piece of string" argument. Most Aussies buy diesels (70% of current X5 sales), given the superior performance/economy ratio to the petrols, and seem happy to put up with the loss in refinement and smelly fuel problems of diesels. As for options, that really depends on your what you want. Don't, for example, go for a Sport model if you plan to spend any time off road. And, as for pricing the best place to start research is carsales.com.au, drive.com.au or carpoint.com.au. Also check redbook.com.au

Thanks Fraser, will do some research on those sites re: pricing. Interesting that diesels are popular here, I know our American friends aren't that keen.

There is a bewildering array of options and variations of what is included standard depending on the year model.
