Picked up some great parts from a member parting out an Imola on Imola 4.6is, that had a 4.8is facelift conversion done at some time.
Grabbed the entire interior with aluminum trims, entire front end including Euro Clear Bi-Xenons. Also was able to get a 4.8is guage shroud. Can't wait to see my 2001 X5 with a new front end, freshly painted, and all the parts I've been hoarding over the years (lemans front flares, heated '06 steering wheel, running boards, rear "is" flares, etc) Some pictures of the goods, also some pictures were from the seller's original ad, thanks again Mario! |
This is what my back office/parts room looks like after a long weekend of work.
https://i.postimg.cc/jdzW7qc7/20181110-181752.jpg BTW, interesting discovery. Underneath the aerodynamics kit side skirts are aluminum running boards. Or at least underneath the black parts truck's there was. Here's where my 4.8is kit is going. After 5 freaking months of death wobble. I figured out I was missing hubcentric rings. The aluminum rings we're terrible
I got plastic and the x5 finally runs smoother than ever. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk |
Yikes on the rings. Wonder why you say terrible about the aluminum. I didn't have any problems with my wife's when I put E70 wheels on her E53.
I maybe recall having to use a wire where to clean rust off the hub before installing but that wasn't a big issue. They were a very precise fit. |
I have e70 wheels on mine as well. The rings would been right in my hand and they're very easy to chip on the hub. I ordered them from Amazon since they were the best seller. I guess looks can be deceiving. Maybe it's just the set I got?
Quote:
|
Sounds like not hardened. They are very thin they would be easy to compress into an oval but once on the hub they should do their job. That said they are aluminum and I expect they will fuse to the hub which will make them fun to remove if I go back to e53 wheels or put on the spare

If you consume a little oil and need to add occasionally you will not hurt the engine going 10,000 miles. I change mine close to when the yellow light comes on. No idea how many miles it's based on liters of gas consumed I think (which makes far far more sense) red light comes on at 20% past recommended. I don't recommend letting red light kick on I needed the dealer to reset that when I took too long once. When. I add a quart every 2000 miles or so I've changed half the oil before the full change. Mobil 1 has no real wear after 10,000 miles only gets dirty from combustion else could go 20,000 or more

today(ish), I decided to drop the lower sump, and do other jobs
jacked up the front up , removed wheels then removed my broken inner wheel arches (there broken where it joins to the undertray) removed my front bumper as it wasn't put on right last time I re fitted it , then realised I'm missing 4 cage nuts (ordered them) £2.00 each !!!!!! removed rad cover and fan , removed all belts, to find a squeak , no pulleys bad, did find some rust on the AC pulley though (in between the grooves) and some on the belt too, ?. wonder if that happened when I parked car up for 2 weeks while I went on holiday? removed the metal undertray easy job. drained oil then undid the sump, going quite well , spilled oil all over the drive, by knocking the oil catch bowl, :( noticed a fair bit of sludge in the sump, found a bit of plastic in there , looks like a piece of the plastic clip that's on the 2 rectangle plastic boxes for the wiring for the coil packs, no , timing guides :)trip to stealers for parts, oh knocked the bumper which broke the T piece for the headlight washers :( new bits ordered, and a quote of 68 for the plate bolts, I don't think so :) hopefully rebuilding tomorrow weather permitting I did take pics, but there on my phone with the car :) |

rebuilt the beast, ticked over perfectly , rev to 2.5 to 3k , it screamed at me , pulley or belt scream, ordered new belt and a new tensioner, as you could grab the belt and pull at least 3 inch of slack the tensioner just leg it go,
oh and I fixed my rear passengers window :) |
Spent the day replacing the drive belt with hydraulic tensioner and pulley, AC belt with tensioner and pulley, idler pulley, water pump, power steering hoses and reservoir. She had been making a squeaking sound running and at 163,000 miles I was sure it needed this service. The water pump looked and felt good but it was a no-brainer to replace it with this mileage since with everything apart, it was only 4 nuts for peace of mind. The power steering reservoir hoses has been slowly leaking directly on my alternator so I was glad I caught it in time. All in all a fun day just wrenching on the girl. Next up, the dreaded ball joints.

Did both front ball joints today. Easy once you clear the way. Remove the wheel, rotor, caliper and remove 3 M6x1.0 screws that hold the backing plate to the hub and rotate 90 degrees. Puts the ball joint, T50 mounting bolts and the ball joint nut in front of God and everybody. A couple of taps with the hammer and it all comes apart effortlessly. Got it down to 30 minutes a side.

So I pulled another sensor and measured it against the one already on the car and they were the same length. It's long enough but not long enough to be clipped in all the mounting points. If I clip it by the bracket on the strut it is too short and and won't reach the bleeder valve where it slips on. But if I attach it to the bleeder valve it's not long enough to clip inside the strut bracket. But there is plenty of length from the connector box (by the fender well) up to the strut bracket. Topic of this thread is what did you do to /for your E53 today?
That means completed projects. It is not intended for chit chat. If you have questions that are off topic use the PM option. There are numerous threads about updated nav/radio, bluetooth, USB, Aux. They are easy to find with the search feature. There is a DIY section where there are threads of most anything you would ever want to do to your X5. When will you guys stop being disrespectful to members by misuse of this thread? |
So we're just going to post what we've done and not discuss it on an automotive forum? Sounds like a great idea. Remember, the PM system on this forum is terrible. It doesn't save sent messages and has a ridiculously low inbox limit for non-Premier members.
If you feel so disrespected why keep checking in here? I'm sure no one is intentionally trying to disrespect anyone. I certainly am not. |

Disrespectful? How is that disrespect. Do you even know what the word means. So everyone just chimes in and say what they did and that's it?yeah. Real great thread. How dare anyone ask something. Then those in the know could maybe direct them to said threads that have been discussed so many times. I'll tell you what, your post is disrespectful, since you're in here just flipping out over dumb shit. If you want to be so helpful. Why not post the damn thread to help folks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Not bound up at all. Certainly some questions and comments are appropriate.
I have never had a problem with the PM function. It works just fine. It may be something on your end or you can contact one of the admins for help. The search function will pull up many great threads about updating the audio system and features going many years back. I always try that first. A lot better than using this thread. If your question isn't answered in the thread you can ask it there. Rather than going to everyone it will put you in touch with those that have the most knowledge or have done what you are planning. Our audio systems are very outdated and there are several made for E53s options to get all the latest features and benefits. I suggest considering an Android based system if you intend to keep your X5 for a reasonable length of time. If that is not the route you want to take might search Ebay for a Mediabridge. I don't think they are available any more but you might find a used one. That would give you bluetooth, handsfree phone, aux and Sirius radio if you add the module. If the forum is worthwhile to you becoming a premier member is a good way to show your support. If need help with search function or something you are doing feel free to PM me anytime. If I can't help I likely can recall a thread that can which would help with Key words for search. I suggest you reconsider adding insults to your posts. |
Oh now you want to help? Did you do anything to yours? Don't think so. Better not post anything.

Key wasnt operating smoothly in door lock so I popped out the cylinder to see if it just needed some lube/clean.
Bummer: discovered the internal part broke again. Put back together and put back in the door as I hear ping ping donk as some parts fell off into the door. Craaaap. Oh well I was already going to order the kit and fortunately it includes all of the parts that now rest at the bottom of my door. $9 Amazon prime next day. So this is the part that self destructs. It's designed too thin and will snap after about 1000 uses. That will last quite a long time until your key fob won't unlock the door. Working on my car is like a box of chocolates, ya never what ya gonna get.
Getting my new tires mounted and balanced, the shop showed me on of my front rims was repaired, showed a small weld on the outer rim of the inside. SMH, FML.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
A bit surprising but if you aren't racing or hard core off roading I wouldn't have a problem with it. The load is spread out pretty even on the tire bead. some quick napkin math shows an estimate of 5500# of force on the bead and 58" of bead on an 18" rim meaning a static load of less than 100# per linear inch. A weld in aluminum thick as a rim can easily handle that.
28" wheel diameter minus 18" rim diameter 30psi was about 11,000# force. Half held by the tread half by the rim 5500# ish. If the rim is already dealing with 11000# of force (both sides) the additional weight of the car is only 11-15% more than when lifted off the ground. Impacts like pot hole will likely not amount to much more than double the weight of the car so 22-30% more than static load. The sidewall will act like spokes to distribute the load evenly around the rim so you don't have to worry about that one spot taking much extra load when hitting the bottom. |
Short story--rims are repaired all the time. If you are concerned take it to place that repairs rims and have them evaluate quality of repair and any risk.
|
I'm fine with it, I send wheelsnto get repaired all the time and even drive on bent wheels on my other beaters. Just wasn't aware and p/o-seller failed to mention it to me.

That sucks that you weren't aware from the previous owner. Maybe, though, the previous owner didn't even know because he was never told as the owner before never told them.
Filled up with 24.5 gallons of go juice at BJ's just now. $2.87 per gallon for 93. Drove 504 miles on last fill up 8 days ago. Nearly 22 MPG. Brad |

Installed my backup camera this morning before the snow hits. Just couldn't see this thing sitting on my desk for the next 5 weeks while I wait for my //Avin Avant-3 system to arrive so I took the opportunity to get this time consuming process out of the way .
Getting the wires through the snorkel boot from the rear fuse box and run nicely through the upper hatch, drilling and mounting the camera took about 3 hours taking my time and cleaning up as I went along. I have the wires tucked away next to the rear fuse box and will wire the power and ground and run the RCA cable to the front a little later. It was getting f'ing cold out there, I couldn't feel my fingers... |
Wow that's as clean of an installation as possibly could do; beautiful

Another option- drill a hole in the truck and run the wire directly to the backup camera. Secure using the existing slot in the trailer hitch cover so it is centered between the parking distance sensors.

Backup-Reverse Camera | Crowz Nest I'm sure this would work with the factory head unit but I think you need the factory TV module along with the factory navigation. I have not personally done this install for the factory navigation systems but there are a few of our members that have. https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...avigation.html My am converting my X5 over to the android system and putting the camera in ahead of time was just to get it out of the way. It does take a few hours to do it right. |

Nokian hakkapeliitta r3 are all set to go but still sitting in the garage, waiting till the snow is about to fly before bolting them up
should be interesting to see how these stand up to the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snows I had on it prior. The Nokians were only about $8each more expensive so I decided to go with the Gold Standard :) |
Put my rebuilt calipers on and new Zimmerman rotors and Akebono pads. Bled the system three times and brakes are kind of mushy. Going to have to get more brake fluid and do an ABS and precharge pump bleed with my Schwaben tool. Strange. Followed the Bentley instructions when changing the calipers and got virtually no brake fluid leaking from the lines. Bled with a power bleeder. I dunno.

This weekend saw some work on big red.
Replaced the 5 bulbs behind the instrument cluster with new. One of mine had blown out and so replaced all of them. Also got all of this ready to go to the body shop. Removed most of the double sided tape/reside and degreased/washed most of the parts so the painter wouldn't have to waste too much time. Painter picked everything up Friday evening. Supposed to be ready tomorrow, but if it's not ready until the end of the week that's fine. I'd rather it be done right than fast. https://i.postimg.cc/WpF7kcHD/20181207-174122.jpg Also got under the truck to assess the condition of the seals. Last oil change I had done was at the dealer (was really pressed for time) and they used the OE fluids... so of course it found every failing seal possible. Started degreasing it and will clean it all up. Going to drop the oil that's in it and refill with the not-so-secret sauce. Hadn't had a problem with these type of leaks in the past so hoping this will buy me a few months to complete a few other obligations before tackling a huge engine maintenance list. https://i.postimg.cc/4yQvxsWn/20181208-121933.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/J7N5q5Rm/20181208-121942.jpg While down there I checked all the torque values on the front suspension rebuild I had done because I had a clunk from the front end when changing directions (FWD to REV, and vice versa). All of the fasteners were good save the front tension arms connection at the bushing to the subframe. Those were considerably loose. Not loose, but not torqued either, got another half turn or so... torqued them down to 122ftlbs and we'll see if that helps the noise after she's back together. |

Replaced the F/P/S window regulator and accelerator base plate.
|
Replaced the front o2 sensors the other day as I already had the truck in the air and had the sensors sitting on a shelf. I had the reinforcement plate off for inspection so made the job fairly easy.
Took out the thin dealership oil and put 20w50 in + lucas oil stabilizer. Also going to add a bit of at205 in there for good measure. Temporary measure to keep the freshly degreased engine from getting filthy again before I do all the seals. Spent a good couple of hours in there with brake clean, purple power, and water. I hate working on oil soaked engines. Waiting for my aero kit to get back from the body shop... can't wait to drive the truck again and see if tightening the front tension arms at the subframe cured my clunking. Can't believe I did not torque them on initial installation. Or maybe they loosened. Yeah that's it, maybe that's what happened. ;) |
Retrofit sunglasses holder to my 4.8iS. Part number below for anyone who wants to do this. Bought part via my dealership for $50. I may be possible to get it a little cheaper on eBay. I just swapped over all my other controls (Sunroof button, garage opener, SOS/Phone, etc) Very easy to do - just (4) torx bits and unplug electronics.

Ordered parts for Heated Steering wheel retrofit. Fuse 29 is in the glovebox so this shouldn't be too hard. Went out for brunch, and will be driving it to the annual ZSCCA Holiday dinner tonight in Sea Isle City. Snapped these shots while I was out and about.

Amancuso, x5 looks great.

Replaced my air filter (always a mission on an M57!) and the turbo charge hose formed gasket (which had arrived from Latvia about two weeks after I replaced the exhaust manifold).
Now to chase an intermittent annoying high-pitched squeal from right rear wheel (brake rotor wear lip I suspect... probably should replace rotors/pads.). |
I recently fixed a squeal on all four brakes of a Volvo I maintain simply removing and reinstalled the pads using anti-squeak under them. Instant cure.
|
This squeal sounds like brakes but only occurs between 15-40mph, gets louder in right turns and quieter in left turns and does not vary with brake application or park brake application. Have applied copper grease etc., checked backing plate, replaced park brake shoes. Nuttin...
|
I had similar when rust chip fell off the rock guard and rubbed on the rotor.

Sweet. Wondering what the Dinan Exhaust actually is on the X5 I just bought. Ships tomorrow, so I havent seen it yet. I suspect the baffles have been removed from the mufflers like on my E38.

What else is done to your exhaust. Just the x pipe. Any sound clips? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Had just straight pipes before, everything else is stock.
It reduced the volume to about 50% quieter and a cleaner sound. Will get sound clips soon, way to windy right now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Yeah I went to a performance shop instead of a local muffler shop because I hate booger welds lol I'm honestly really bumped how much quieter it is now. But you can definitely hear how smooth it is even at idle. Gotta start looking for something else now... Not gonna go back to straight pipes but maybe change out the mufflers. I found one off the beaten path. It wasn't posted long before I swooped in.
2002 BMW X5 4.6is Stage 3. 107k Original owner has 20+ cars, purchased it new. Maintained 100% with full records back to day one. Sold 5 years ago to his personal chef who lives on his property with 90k on the clock, so in 5 years she drove it 17k miles. He had his personal mechanic service it after purchase. The owner and her husband bought new cars and had'nt driven the X5 in 6-7 months past cranking it and a short errand. Always garaged. Came with winter tires/wheels (new Blizzaks) and a perfect set of Style 87's with new rubber on all 4 as well. The seller liked the woodgrain better than the silver trim, so it has a dark wood trim in it now, but the full silver trim set down to the shifter knob came along with it. #score It should be here Sat or Sun, hoping to detail it and get some pics up. Reading up on the 4.6is models, looks like 3000 or 4000 were made in total. Also they have bigger brakes than the 4.4 models, which is a nice +. I retrofitted 750 brakes to my 740 for some added stopping power, probably negated by the ceramic pads i went with that dont dust and dont stop as well as the super duster 5000 pads they come with. Quote:

Awesome, THE best looking wheel on these imho.
Selling the ones that came on it? They might fetch some recovery coin! Quote:
