^Yes - are you talking about the rear door midrange? That housing will unscrew from the door, but that black ring on the back of the housing might drop into the door panel so if you have the door panel removed just unscrew the black ring on the back and then you can free the whole housing with those retaining tabs on the bench -

Another note as I was curious that semcoMike posted up about his factory non-DSP door woofers being 2ohm and did a bit of digging -

the DSP door woofers are 8ohm just like the other speakers that are shared between the E53 models (front door tweeters, rear door mids, and dash mids)

WAIT PROP - Did you say JL powered BSW sub?

I went juuuust a bit overboard. In fact, the size of this JL amp has pushed forward the notion that I will run the Android 6.0 offering pretty soon. The difference in the amps is ridiculous. Now, that could be that BSW sent me a for sh!t amp- which I believe is true. But for a couple hundred $, the difference in what I had versus what I have now is outstanding.

You're a braver man than me to go balls out like this. Doing the speakers is enough to me - at my limited time doing some splices on the speakers or minor soldering to swap the speakers out. I'm just hoping the stock DSP amp taking the 10 speakers to 4 ohm is livable and won't shorten lifespan of any components.

But thanks to you guys and Jay, im not worried. Super stoked to get the JL components in and installed

Prop let me know how you do - the Memphis midranges I got on eBay for $35 shipped? If anything just trim that ring all around so there is nothing left and it should go in place on the rear door. Sucks that you have to rip the door panel twice.

I'm actually in the opposite boat I'm looking to get my factory dash midranges out of the trash and see if I can cut the factory speaker out yet retain the mount and then hot glue those 2" Vifa/Peerless midranges in place. So I have the same midrange driver in the dash and rear doors.

The Memphis fit well for the most part but I feel I could make it more factory like.

Edit - don't feel like going to the trash bin and since the Memphis units are 85db so a touch more efficient than the Vifa - which is better to have more efficient replacement speakers since going down to 4 ohm.

Alright can I get some impedance advice here -

In a way I am worried going from 10 speakers of 8 ohm impedance to all being 4 ohm will kill the DSP amp over time - and my goal is oem+ with keeping the DSP amp.

Everything I read says that if you are going to lower impedance but the drivers are more efficient, it negates any extra amp draw since it is using power more efficiently? But I don't have a confirmation of this.

However, I am debating sticking with 8 ohm Dayton Audio woofers, and leaving the other 6 at a lower 4 ohm. Will this make a difference keeping 40% of the drivers at stock impedance levels? The 8 ohm Dayton woofers are 88.7 db sensitivity, while the JL components and 4 ohm Dayton woofers are 92db efficient.

I'm driving myself crazy trying to figure this audiophile shit out.

Wish I could answer your question. In my experience (I used to be a pro mobile audio tech) changing impedance on speakers for OEM systems was not a good idea and almost always ended up with interference and distortion when listening to anything above ~25% volume. I am very surprised that the OEM DSP amp is turning out to be 4ohm stable across all 10 channels without producing negative results.

@prop, I can confirm that BSW's amp is not a very good unit. I want to replace mine as well but I went through so much trouble making it look/function so well in the electronics mounting bracket that I have a hard time replacing it. I know I should, but the BSW just looks so good and solid where I have it on the rack that it keeps me from ordering a small form factor mono block to replace the crappy thing.

Drove 850 miles today with the Eonon GA6166 driving my speaker upgrades and loved every minute of it.

Such clarity and I'm getting a really nice low end punch from my DSP sub connected to an aftermarket amp.

Happy camper!

Thanks for the speaker upgrade guidance folks!

Mike

Yeah I went with a focal mono amp and had to do some custom fabrication n the plastic moldings in the trunk area to conceal the amp but make it blend in nicely.
