I had a perfectly ok service experience with my airbag recall. They didn't try to sell me on any service and they even un-stuck my oil service interval red light that I couldn't because I waited too long apparently.

Went back to the shop today to have them lower the rear air suspension. Looks sooo much better now.

More pics to come this weekend after it gets a bath

Standard operating procedure for dealer service dept. is to inspect vehicles for problems other than the service requested. I would see it as for my safety and potential greater expense later if the other issues are not addressed. I think the dealer views it as a potential liability if they don't and certainly additional profit opportunity.

Without a warranty any 10 plus year or older vehicle is obviously a significant risk if one cannot DIY and take advantage of aftermarket or OEM parts. If not a DIYer I suggest developing a great relationship with your service advisor or take advantage of lower labor rates at a well recommended independent shop that specializes in BMWs.

I read the other thread. I have no idea why anyone would accept the input of a forum rather than take it to the dealer to be sure their airbag should or should not be replaced.

There's a thread on here about the airbag recall, and I am convinced the geniuses at BMW corporate have turned this Takata recall into a money making scheme. My statistical analysis so far from that thread, shows a 0% chance of getting an airbag replaced, and 100% chance of getting a $1200+ estimate for something else. Seriously. Check it out:

So yeah, it's clearly a 30 minute job, even with a few smoke breaks. But the $1200 is mandatory per the recall protocol. You DO get free coffee with that though, which should take some of the sting off.
Huh? What does a separate issue that he chose to mention to the service adviser have to do with "a money making scheme"? He could easily turn down the job. The recall itself isn't going to cost him anything, so I'm not sure I see what the problem is.

Glad to hear that you got some benefit out of the visit. But just a guess ... you have a non-sport steering wheel and you did not need an airbag replacement.

BMW's multiple letters to me, the recent alarming postcard, and a few phone calls from me to them ... all seem to confirm my hypothesis about a non-sport steering wheel, but they are not willing to confirm it directly when asked. Gathering data, ignoring most opinions here, so far is confirming it.

It all makes perfect sense. I just wish someone at BMW would be able to directly confirm things when asked. It would be a true danger if somebody who did have a sport steering wheel, and did have its airbag replaced, and it was replaced with a faulty Takata bag (I believe all 3 must be true to actually have an airbag that warrants replacement) ... thought since they only had a weak 3 spokes that their wheel was non-sport (wrong of course, since the sport is 3 and the non-sport is 4), and skipped on the recall. So I can understand why BMW's party line is what it is.

Still waiting for a data point to contradict this.

Just throwing in some jokes there. As I mention elsewhere, I understand why they're doing it.

As far as the cost, some people who regularly visit the dealer would truly have zero cost - just get it done next time the car is in for regular service. But for everyone else it takes some time at least, inconvenience, effort, perhaps a long drive for those in more remote areas.

I have a sport steering wheel but it only took them minutes to confirm I didn't have a takata airbag. I thought I recalled seeing that only replaced airbags were under the recall for early years. I have an 01.

Driving to the dealer is inconvenient, but not as inconvenient as having your face and chest filled with metal shrapnel.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
