One thing interesting is that when the radio switches to FM and then I switch back to CD changer, the radio says CHECK CD and I cannot select any of the disk numbers. Then the radio gives up and I can no longer here the music after it clicks a bit.

You think maybe because I have an older car and a newer DICE unit, this is causing compatibility issues?

It wouldn't be that at all. Where (and when) was the kit purchased?
