No problems. Check if you have a Mk3 or Mk4 (observe your SW version in SET or SETTINGS - first digit indicates Mk3 or Mk4)

Mk3 newest SW version = 3/1-63
Mk4 newest SW version = 4/1-91

Then download the OS, burn a CD (make sure it is Mode2/Form1 for the Mk3) and insert into nav and follow on-screen instructions.

You have an older version (3-1/40 = Mk3, colour, v4.0).
The last version ever made for the Mk3 was v6.3 (3-1/63)
The upgrade is worth it.

Mode2/Form1 = CD format. See here for more details:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-ROM
but you don't need to know the techno-detail :-)

Download an OS image, (any nav OS v22 or later will do).
Note that Nav OS CDs contain versions for Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, Mk4, NAVI01 and NAVI02 nav units. Hence the OS CD release doesn't always match the nav SW release.

Once you have the CD image downloaded, use ImgBurn to burn the CD.
ImgBurn will treat the nav OS image correctly and make a Mode2/Form1 disc.

But verify the disc is Mode2/Form1 before you insert into the nav, otherwise you'll create a headache for yourself.

3-1/40 = MK[3], hardware v[1], software v2[4].[0].

Latest version is 3-1/63 = MK[3], hardware v[1], software v2[6].[3].

Same for MK4:
4-1/91 = MK[4], hardware v[1], software v2[9].[1]

Navigation Update

I am new to this forum and have just purchased a 4 years old 330Ci M Sport and it has a Navigation System installed, OS version 4-1/12. I see that the threads discuss version 27 / 28 and now 29. I have a very simple question, my appologies if this has been ask previously, that I hope someone help me with please - If I down load one of the updated OS versions, can I jump from V12 upto say V28 in one go? also what changes will I notice? The car came with 2003-2 DVD disc.

You can directly upgrade from v21.2 (4-1/12 = 21.2) to v29. The only issue which could happen (please someone confirm this) is when you upgrade from <v17, where the system will ask you for a "key cd". This CD is available for download somewhere in the forum.

I've sucessfully updated a friend's E46 from v24 (4-1/40) to v28 (4-1/80).

(PS: how does the version show for <v17 version? 4-1/??)

Thank you for the quick response, if I start the process and I am asked for the "key CD" will the system revert back to the current version, the id is 4-1/12

RJD, I went from v4-1/12 to 4-1/91 in one jump on a 2004 330i Touring using appy's advice earlier in this thread. I followed it to the letter and it worked perfectly. Rerouting seems a bit sharper and the screen looks a little better. Wish I could do a postcode search though - is there any way to get that (I'm using a 2004-1 Nav CD)? thanks

Hi,

first a Postcode search only works with the 2006/1 DVD High version or newer.

The MK4 never asks for a Key cd, only the MK3.

gr. Appy
