Hi ,
If you want to update the software in the mark3 then you only need the correct cd not a gt1
Version 1-3/63 is the latest possible with the mark3..What version do you presently have?
I use software named navcoder to customise the nav system this is easier and does lots more than what the gt1 can do.

what do you mean by this? "can you try using a different cable between the head and the PC?" there is only one cable included in the package that connects between the head and the laptop which goes to ethernet port of the laptop (white cable).

thanks
If you have it, it would be on the drivers side near the strut as shown below.

That is an idea Rondo, thanks for the input. I would have to build the interface or purchase the Resler interface and neither is an option for me. Besides, changing the startup screen is as far as I'm willing to go when playing around with the software without the GT1, which BMW uses, or an Autologic system. Other than the navigation, I was hoping to change the other settings programmed into the car's system. I am asking for info because I was wondering if it's a worthwhile investment to purchase the GT1 and which version? I intend to keep my BMWs

For the E53 there is no point in buying a OPS. The OPS hasn't got any diagnostic ability it is only used for programming on cars newer than the E65. All you need is the EDIC (yellow head) which will allow diagnostics and programming.

I was reading about the dreaded "SELFLEVEL SUSP INACT" message when one forumer posted that all that had to be done to fix his error message was to
reprogram the boot up sequence for the system check. I wonder if this is done with the GT1 and if anyone in this thread has done the same.

Here's the post:

"hi all,

There are alot of replies and forgive for not reading all of them and if a repeat somethin... BUT since having my x5 4.4 i have had the susp inac warning around 5 times and every dealer who has checked says its fine, I can feel and see its fine. One of the master bmw service guys told me it is to do with the system checking everything upon startup and sometimes there is a delay between them causing the checker(don't know lingo here) to think that the susp isn't activated when it hasn't given it a chance. He reprogrammed the boot up sequence and i have not had the issue since. This reconfiguration does not mean that the sensor for the suspension is disabled it works fine. "

I have tried this but it doesn't give me the option to modify the VO and wants a disk with the modified VO on it for upload. The recoding just flies straight through and you don't get the option to manipulate it. Any other clues?

I retrofitted powerfold mirrors (S313A) to my E46 M3 some time ago but as there isn't a retrofit path in the SSS, my vehicle order (VO) wasn't up to date. So after I bought my GT1 setup I tried to change my vehicle order but on my current version 28, the VO update path needs you to upload the new VO off a disk given to you by BMW, which obviously I don't have. So after a lot of help from a BMW tech I found out how to manually update the VO using the SSS and thought it might be of interest to those following this thread.

Step 1
Start the SSS and instead of selecting your normal car i.e. in my case 3 series, E46, select 8 series, E31. It will then take you to another screen with the full BMW line up and it is here that you can select E46. What this is doing is taking you back to the DIS V43 coding type setup but run through the SSS.

Step 2

First of all I wanted to display my VO, which is something you can't do if you select your car as per the normal procedure when setting up the SSS connection. So after step 1 at this screen, these are the options you are presented with. I selected option 3

Step 3

All of the vehicle order and specs are stored in the instrument cluster. The SSS displays all of the information on the car.

As you can see option 313 isn't there.

Step 4

Once back at the main menu I selected option 1, recoding.

Step 5

Select KOMBI, as that is where the VO is stored.

Step 6

Confirm it is the KOMBI you want to code by pressing yes.

Step 7

Select recode control unit.

Step 8

Read what you have to do later on. Don't worry about this as the current settings are there when you have to re-enter them.

Step 9

It now asks you if you want to code the KOMBI to suit this car only. You can to a test run which doesn't code it to the car. Select yes, to code it to your car.

Step 10

Here you can change the chassis number of the car it is being coded in to. My chassis number came up as default, so I selected no to the change.

Step 11

My VO came up and I selected no (from memory), which basically allows me to go in and edit the VO.

Step 12

My designation code came up, I entered yes.

Step 13

The time criterion came up which is the month and year of manufacture, my details once again came up by default so I entered yes.

Step 14

The next screen goes in to the VO modification screen. I selected option 3, add feature.

Step 15

I wanted to add my option code, refered to as "SA", so I selected this.

Step 16

Using the keypad on the screen I entered in my new SA code i.e. 313, pressing yes after the code entry.

It keeps on looping back to this screen after each entry, so repeat the process if you have more than one entry.

Step 17

Once I had entered all of the option codes I pressed the left point back button and selected recode. The KOMBI coding started.

Step 18

The recoding was completed

Step 19

After the recode I went back in to display the VO and you will see my option addition is the last entry

Step 20

There was another screen in here which i didn't take a photo off, that was to terminate and check the entries. I did this and then it came up with this screen

Step 21

I didn't not follow the instruction in the last step and tried to go straight back in to the SSS and came up with this error

So I exited the SSS and went in to the DIS and did a short test, followed by a full function test of the KOMBI and it showed no faults. I then went back in to the SSS and all was well, it picked up the connection and recognised my car and could read the VO when I pulled up the CKM settings.

All in all it was reasonably straight forward. The only screen I was unsure of was on step 9 when it asked my if I just wanted to do it for this car. It looks like I picked the right option. And that is how you update your VO on an E46, I presume the E53 might be the same.

Diagnosis Quicktest Result

Hi Weasel,

i got the new GT1 head from Yohotech as a replacement and now i can run the diagnosis on my X5. i had a chance to do a quicktest and would like to share them with you as i don't have the printouts from the dealer. it is highly appreciated if you can explain the results as i would save some $$$ from the labor if it requires to replace some parts and all. btw, if you can recall i was facing a lot of issues with the 'trans failsafe prog' being there all the time not until i changed the 2 camshaft sensors, i'm not sure if it's a coincidence but since that time no more trans failsafe prog, but only less than a week....bam my engine knocked... i know it's so sad, brought the car to my mechanic where they specialized on Land/Range Rovers (i was a previous Discovery owner myself prior to X5). at first they saw cylinder #5? (3rd from the left side) is busted, coil is blown and lost thread on the cylinder head, fixed by the machinist put it together but no luck. so they opened the engine and there it was, a blown piston on the same area and a small crack on the cylinder head. i got the X back last thursday, engine runs fine except for the noticeable noise (vanos maybe?) but not until 2 - 3 days later i still have the rough idle issue.
Anyways, please refer to the attached snapshots for the quicktest results, i know there is a lot more than what i can see from these shots, but i would be a great relief if you can help me figure it out?

thanks a million for this forum as i am not alone in this journey......

cheers,

Everything with an X on the quick test is a failure since the last time a test was run. You can do a quick delete then a retest and see if they come back, if they do then you have a hard fault that you need to investigate.

In the last couple of screen shots you need to add each of those to your own individual test plan and test them one by one. The DIS will run you through it each step of the way.
