If you consume a little oil and need to add occasionally you will not hurt the engine going 10,000 miles. I change mine close to when the yellow light comes on. No idea how many miles it's based on liters of gas consumed I think (which makes far far more sense) red light comes on at 20% past recommended. I don't recommend letting red light kick on I needed the dealer to reset that when I took too long once. When. I add a quart every 2000 miles or so I've changed half the oil before the full change. Mobil 1 has no real wear after 10,000 miles only gets dirty from combustion else could go 20,000 or more

today(ish), I decided to drop the lower sump, and do other jobs

jacked up the front up , removed wheels then removed my broken inner wheel arches (there broken where it joins to the undertray) removed my front bumper as it wasn't put on right last time I re fitted it , then realised I'm missing 4 cage nuts (ordered them) £2.00 each !!!!!!
removed rad cover and fan , removed all belts, to find a squeak , no pulleys bad, did find some rust on the AC pulley though (in between the grooves) and some on the belt too, ?. wonder if that happened when I parked car up for 2 weeks while I went on holiday?
removed the metal undertray easy job. drained oil then undid the sump, going quite well , spilled oil all over the drive, by knocking the oil catch bowl, noticed a fair bit of sludge in the sump, found a bit of plastic in there , looks like a piece of the plastic clip that's on the 2 rectangle plastic boxes for the wiring for the coil packs,
no , timing guides trip to stealers for parts, oh knocked the bumper which broke the T piece for the headlight washers
new bits ordered, and a quote of 68 for the plate bolts, I don't think so
hopefully rebuilding tomorrow
weather permitting
I did take pics, but there on my phone with the car

I don't have too much oil usage. Mine uses just over a quart in between intervals. Maybe 1 qt/4000 miles. The X is mostly city driving. It never runs more than an hour and mostly 15 minutes at a time.

I'm at 118k, nothing wrong at the moment.

If it ain't broke don't fix it? Or replace before it is too late?

Just have other more concerning repairs that need to attend to first.
118000 here, have the new pump, thermostat, and the rest of the cooling system ready to go here in a box. I'll take it off the road soon and do it all. I prefer the "replace before it is too late" methodology, but either way works provided you aren't taking your X5 out of town very often. If you do go out of town, use the preventative maintenance style of replacement.

I wonder how I could see what condition my water pump is in, I'm not sure if someone replace it before I bought the car

You can only get a rough idea without pulling it. Remove the belt and spin it. Try to wobble it around. The shaft/bearing should have no side to side play in it and it should spin freely without feeling any catching/grittiness.
