Navigation OS Upgrade versus whole car system upgrade
I was recently sent a an offer to upgrade my Nav Map DVD to 2007/2 for £99 so I did this at my local dealer. As I had seen this thread about updating the OS (mine is 4-1/30) I asked them to update the system with V29.1 so that I could use the postcode entry, etc on the new Map disc. They gave me the DVD and after checking with their service people arranged for me to have this "Ten minute upgrade" for £23.50.
However, after taking the car in to them and having this done I checked the settings page and found it still said 4-1/30 - in fact all they had done was take out my new 2007/2 map DVD and replaced it with another one that was the same. They then said this was a misunderstanding and they could not do the the O/S upgrade to give me further functionality and did not charge me the £23.50. I then emailed BMW UK to ask them why a dealer would say that I could not get increased functionality by upgading the Nav O/S. After a few emails I got the message back that they had tested it and informed the dealer that they could do the upgrade and I would get increased functionality including postcode input. I have just phoned the dealer to get the upgrade done and they are now saying that BMW UK have told them that "although unusual they can do a whole car system upgrade for me". They want the car for a day and say they will be charging for an hour of effort at £141. My protesting that it only needs a CD putting in the car for a few minutes just to do the Navigation software cuts no dice with them. My question is this: Should I take the offer of the whole system upgrade on a 3 1/2 year old car - or am I just wasting my money and I should just download the upgrade from your suggested sites and do the Nav upgrade myself? I was willing to pay £23.50 to be perfectly legal and not seen to be cheating BMW - but they just seem to be messing me around. |

Thats a lot of difference, and you get quite a few new features, and a lot less bugs. Sounds like your dealer is not familiar with nav systems, why not do it yourself now? Or go to another dealer, and ask them specifically if they are familiar with updating the nav software for the nav system (and NOT the software for the rest of the car!) Jochen |

Thanks for your comments Jochen and gwc.
I have burned my own O/S disc and done the Nav upgade with no problems. I suppose I now cancel the appointment I have next week to have the "whole car system upgrade" and keep my £141. - Unless someone thinks that the rest of the car will get a big benefit from a system upgrade? |
